Jon Stewart: America’s Most Trusted Newsman?

Stewart delights in taking politicians and news organizations to task for their shortcomings.

With the passing of news giant Walter Cronkite, Time Magazine decided to poll the country on who takes the mantle of America’s most trusted newsman. The field included Charlie Gibson, Katie Couric, and Brian Williams, but the winner was Jon Stewart.

The Huffington Post said it best, declaring that Stewart would probably accept the news as “downright apocalyptic for America” but is it shocking in any way, shape, or form? Evening news rating have been dropping for years and speaking in terms of the competition, Stewart split the “not an evening news anchor” vote. I have to admit, I don’t catch The Daily Show as often as I should, but no matter your politics, it is clear that Stewart is doing something you can’t find anywhere else.

His show combines comedy with intelligent observation and interpretation of the events around us. Take out the comedy, and you have what news organizations are flogged for messing up in dangerous times, when they should be at their best. The lead up to the Iraq War and the housing crisis and subsequent economic meltdown are just two high profile instances when the media has been lambasted for failing to hold the right people accountable.

Stewart does that and he shouldn’t have the title of most trusted newsman but its understandable why he might have another. ‘Person who Americans Can Identify With Most’. I guess it doesn’t have the same ring to it.

This was almost as exciting as November 4th.

Digging into the results of the poll, provides some interesting details:

-Charlie Gibson ‘won’ Oklahoma and Montana but he’s from Illinois. Is there any rhyme of reason to this? There has to be something the citizens of those states like about him. I love to play this game with ESPN Sports Nation polls.

-Brian Williams carried battleground states Indiana, Florida, and Arizona and dominated the field in Vermont. They love Williams in Vermont.

-Katie Couric was in last place nationwide and only won Iowa. If this was the primaries she would be in great shape! Oh yeah. A little political humor.

“Oh yeah. A little political humor.” – good ol’ fashioned humor right there.
